The Town of Ulster Public Library is seeking a qualified and motivated Library Assistant to join our team. We are a small public library located in Kingston, NY and we are part of the 66 library Mid-Hudson Library System. This position is subject to Ulster County Civil Service requirements and appointment is provisional on meeting minimum civil service requirements and taking the relevant civil service exam next time it is offered.

This is a Full-Time Monday-Friday position (35 hours a week) during library operating hours.

Duties include:

  • staffing the circulation desk and providing library service
  • checking materials in and out 
  • organizing and shelving library materials
  • opening library cards and maintaining patron records and confidentiality
  • assisting patrons with the public computers, printing, copy machine, and fax 
  • answering phone and email
  • providing one-on-one tech assistance by appointment
  • in conjunction with programmers, helping to create, advertise, and implement library programs
  • helping to manage our social media, library calendar, and website
  • basic book processing and minor book repairs as needed
  • over-seeing the work of part-time staff We are a small library with a friendly staff, and you will be encouraged to take on additional projects as needed.

$16.17-17.53/hr based on experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelors degree; OR B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associates degree and two (2) years of experience, in a library setting, performing duties related to library functions; OR C. Graduation from high school, or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience, in a library setting, performing duties related to library functions; OR D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated A, B and C above.

What we’re looking for:

Friendliness, strong social and communication skills. Strong research skills and curiosity. This is a public-facing position in a rapidly changing environment and you must be able to speak to people of all ages and backgrounds and adapt to changing conditions. Background in arts or crafts a plus. Experience with social media/web design a plus. Library experience preferred.

*Ability to speak Spanish or a language other than English fluently highly preferred.
