If you’re looking for something a little more serious, you could try out Rat Bohemia, by Sarah Schulman. Otherwise, try something by Jeannette Winterson, or Charlie Jane Anders, or James Baldwin, or Dorothy Allison, to name a few.
Looking for some videos? Kanopy has entire sections dedicated to LGBTQ cinema, both in terms of documentaries and fiction. Here are some highlights, in no particular order:
- United in Anger: A History of Act Up
- T’Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness: Queer Blues Divas of the 1920s
- The Miseducation of Cameron Post
The best part of Pride month is that no matter how many recommendations we give, we barely scratch the surface of fantastic LGBTQ contributions to art, literature, and life. For more information on Pride, and to see what events are happening this month, check out the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center on Facebook, or other local organizations.
Ultimately, though, just have fun, be safe, and open yourself up to learning something new this Pride season.
